The former post office building in Lucerne is being transformed into a library and lecture theatres for PHZ Lucerne. With the change of use to one involving high levels of occupancy, a smoke removal concept was developed and subject to a computational test using flow simulation.
A room-by-room smoke removal concept was prepared for the local authority building permit application, and specific protection levels were agreed with the buildings insurance company to guarantee protection of life in in the event of fire. With 3D flow simulations based on computational fluid dynamics, calculations and evaluations were carried out for the lecture theatres, seminar rooms and reading areas, along with the restaurant and atrium. A predefined fire scenario was simulated and the required air flows were optimised. As a result visibility was evaluated and rendered graphically.
